What a relief when the garment fits, but most retail purchases require some adjustment. Often it is length, sometimes waist girth, but beyond that it gets complicated. I will alter trousers, skirts, dresses, in fact any garment whatsoever, even in animal skin.
I need to see the garment on the body, with the correct heels and underwear, because even shortening may be better effected at the shoulder or midseam, rather than at the hem. |
I alter girths at the length opening or at the side seam where, for increase, I can hide a triangular insert under the arm. To shape the waist, I often create extra darts at the back or under the bust. I solve gaping necklines by sewing a taut tape inside or inserting darts for the larger bust. Strapless dresses are kept up using fine steel struts at the side, anchored in a waist band. |
